Places to visit

Durham with its magnificent Norman Castle and Cathedral, is a half an hour drive, and is now a World Heritage Site. Durham has a Victorian indoor market, lovely riverside walks, and Botanic Gardens.

There is a Farmers Market in Stanhope on the last Saturday of the month. There are Farmers Markets in the area on each Saturday in the month and some Sundays too. We sell our own home reared beef, lamb and pork from Woodcroft Farm.

Well placed for sightseeing in the North East, we are within an hour’s drive of the lively centres of Newcastle and Gateshead and within half an hour of Beamish Open Air Museum and

the quaint historic market towns of Barnard Castle with Bowes Museum and Hexham with a beautiful Abbey.

The unspoilt Northern Pennines are on the doorstep, and boast a popular visitor attraction at Killope Wheel and lead mining centre. Day trips to the Alnwick Castle Gardens and Holy Island are again only one hour away.

The one hour journey to Penrith is stunning passing Killope Wheel, Alston, and the highest hilltop café on Hartside pass before descending into the northern lake district.

Things to do

There are many sporting events within easy reach - County Cricket at Chester-le-Street; Horse racing at Newcastle, Sedgefield and Hexham; Athletics at Gateshead; Rugby at Durham and Newcastle.

The North Pennines have been designated as an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty", with spectacular walks including the Weardale Way which passes through our farm and the Pennine Way which is within easy reach. There are excellent areas for walking and cycling - Hamsterley Forest, where cycle hire is available and Durham's disused railway tracks are within easy reach and cover many miles - routes can be provided. An abundance of footpaths and bridleways are available to explore where rare birds and plants can be seen. There are several local riding schools which offer trekking as well as tuition.

There are also fishing opportunities in the area, we have our own stretch of private fishing on the river Wear which is available to our visitors. A licence is required and can be arranged. There are several good, well stocked reservoirs within a 20 minute drive, details can be provided.
